Moving With Babies: Easing into Adjustment

Relocating to a new home is always a stressful event, but it is even more so when it comes to babies. And this doesn’t even include the fact that if the baby is a newborn, not only do you need to consider the needs of the baby, but mom is probably still getting adapted to life with that newborn, much less having to deal with a move too. Making matters worse, many new moms are still getting used to the extra demands of motherhood and often underestimate how tired they still are from the birth, so consideration for that must also be paid.

Take your Time. If you are moving, chances are good that you have had at least a little time to adapt to the idea of picking up roots. If this is the case, be sure to do everything you can to pace yourself so that mom, in addition to taking care of baby, isn’t trying to tackle everything at once.

Another factor that often contributes to making a move difficult is the fact that the actual time to move might be longer than expected. A move, depending on how far away you are going, can take anywhere from one day to several days. Whatever that time that is anticipated, plan for it to make it as smooth as possible.

Play it Safe. Another important issue to consider when moving with a baby is the safety of your new home. Oftentimes, you might or might not have time to look at your new home before you actually get there. Regardless, you should do everything you can to make sure that everything is safe for when baby arrives. This goes not only for the physical challenges that lay ahead, but for the dangers that might not be visible, such as unseen pollutants that may lurk and affect health adversely

Making the Move. However long you are anticipating the move to take, make sure you consider baby when your move is in the process. For example, if you are new parents, you are probably still having trouble anticipating all of the things baby will need during a trip, much less anticipating all of these needs under the pressure of a move. A good way to avoid this is to ask someone who has had the experience for their advice. Someone who has moved with a baby might be able to give you lots of pointers that you would never have had otherwise.

Schedule us Time. No matter how busy things get during a move, try to always remember to schedule some us time to be a new family. Without doing this, you will always remember the move that was taken at the detriment of sacrificing time after baby’s birth to celebrate and make some of this new life something to remember.

Always remember that Utah is a state where the family is celebrated. Whether Utah is your place of departure or your new home, remember to take advantage of all the benefits available here. They are all there for the asking, and will make a world of difference when you take advantage of it.
